Cibolo is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Cibolo comes from the Creek Indian word "kibo" meaning "place where blueberries grow." The first Europeans to visit this area were Frenchmen in 1734 and they named it All Saints because they found many blueberries there. In 1836, General Sam Houston appointed J.M. Ewell as agent to purchase land for a new county courthouse in what is now Hudspeth County and he assigned Cibolo as its seat. The first post office in Cibolo was established in 1837 with Wm Ladd as its supervisor. In 1840, the Mexican government granted an exemption from military service to all Texans who could provide $5 per month towards postage on their letters home from Mexico City. By 1846, when Texas became an American country, everyone living within 3 miles of Mexico City had to pay $10 per month or face deportation; this policy continued until 1861 when it was abolished by Congress because of the American Civil War (see Mexican–American War). In 1876, John Wesley Powell discovered shale oil near Fayetteville and soon after natural gas began flowing through pipelines under Hudspeth County into northern Austin. This led to increased industrial development around Cibolo and other towns along the pipeline routes including Midland (1921), San Marcos (1927), Friendswood (1935), Deer Park (1945), and Highland Heights (1950). From 1951 until 1978, CIBOLO TEXASGasCO was headquartered here before moving eastward to Round Rock in 1984. Since then, most major multinational corporations have located here such as BP(1995), Siemens AG(1999), Toyota(2006) and Dell(2010). As recently as 2006 there were rumors that Google may move its main research center out of Mountain View due to increasing traffic congestion on I-15 south of Round Rock but no formal announcement has been made yet... Cibolo is a city in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 26,589 at the 2010 census. Cibolo is the county seat of Webb County and part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. It became a city on July 1, 1907. The first European settler in what would become Cibolo was Spanishman José de la Vega who arrived in 1836. He named his new land Cerro Gordo (Gordon Hill). Mexican settlers followed soon after and by 1848 there were over 100 families living in what would later be called Cibolo. In 1853 two brothers, Sam Houston and James Fenton bought 640 acres of land around present day downtown Cibolo from Juan Antonio Flores y Luna for $650 per acre ($2,000 today). The brothers developed this land into Rancho San Antonio de Padua with seven miles of road leading to it from east to west and thirty-six households divided among four horse herds totaling 22 head each producing $1 per Head (the equivalent of $40 per year today). By 1860 only six families lived in Cibolos core while ranching operations were conducted outlying areas including present day Slaughterburg and Mission Bend which are now unincorporated communities within Webb County. There was no local school until 1908 when Thomas Sutherlin organized one as part of the effort to build a rail line through central Webb County from Round Rock to Wichita Falls via San Marcos I&M Railroad The first public school building was built on Elm Street near current day Gonzales Elementary School between 1915-1917 A post office opened at Rancho San Antonio de Padua on February 15th 1865 serving residents of both rancho and town until 1902 when it moved to its current location on First Avenue just south of Main Street In 1898 George Wuerth donated 408 acres east of town along US Highway 183 for public use including a school, parkland, freight depot and water tower In 1906 James Fenton donated an additional 106 acres lying north side of US Highway 183 between Slaughterburg Road and FM 620 West forming present day Jordan Valley Park which continues today as parts Of Hwy 183 loop On December 3rd 1916 Pecos Bill began construction on Brownsville Dam located next door to present day Trinity Lutheran Church across FM 620 West from where he had been working since 1911 Erected as a memorial & civic center for those lost during World War I & WWII Brownsville Dam remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in eastern Webb County
In 1827, the first white man to set foot in Cibolo County was José Vasconcelos. He and his family were the first European settlers in what is now Texas. In 1836, Mexican forces invaded Texas and war ensued. Cibolo County came under Mexican rule and was not part of the treaty that ended the war. The Vasconcelos were forced to leave their land in 1837 and returned to Mexico.
