The National Guard of Texas was organized on November 16, 1866. At that time, there were only a few thousand men in the state. The first unit to be called to service was Battery A of the 2nd Regiment of Texas Infantry. The Guardsmen served for two years with no pay and little rest. In 1870, Governor George Hogg established the Texas Rangers as a paramilitary force to keep order in the state. The Rangers were made up of volunteers from various counties in the state and received no salary or benefits other than their uniforms and equipment. They patrolled the countryside looking for lawbreakers and criminals. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant ordered all military forces in the United States disbanded except for those under his command at Fort Stanton on Long Island Sound. The Texans responded by forming a volunteer force known as Company D of the 1st Regiment ofTexas Infantry which had been raised at Cedar Hill near Austin. The Guard arrived in Cedar Hill just after Thanksgiving 1865 and soon found itself engaged in various tasks associated with Reconstruction followingthe American Civil War including guard duty at Fort Sam Houston during Reconstruction exercises taught by General John J.] Hardee at nearby San Antonio Navy Yard (now part of University Park). The Cedar Hill National Guard was first organized on December 15, 1916. The unit was called the 3rd Infantry Regiment and at its inception it consisted of 36 men. On May 10, 1917 the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, Texas National Guard. On July 9, 1921 the battalion became a brigade and on October 18 that year it was made an all-volunteer brigade with Headquarters at Camp Bowie in San Antonio. In 1926 the brigade became an infantry division and on November 7 it designated itself as the 5th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National Guard. It served in this capacity until September 1942 when it evolved into a tank division under command of Major General James Hogg who also served as Commanding Officer of Brigade Headquarters from October 1942 to August 1944. On September 8, 1944 the brigade was reassigned to Tactical Air Command (TAC) where it remained untilactivated on February 14, 1946 effective upon its disbandment as a national guard unit within TACs Strategic Air Command (SAC).
Cedar Hill is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Cedar Hill is located on the east side of TX 9 between I-10 and US Highway 287. Cedar Hill is bordered by Aledo to the north, Wharton to the west, and Tomball to the south. The first settlement in what would become Cedar Hill was made in 1836 when two men from Missouri named James Bemis and John Freeman homesteaded land near what is now FM 446. In 1838, Alfred Blankenbaker established a sod farm on land that still makes up much of today's town limits. By 1840, several other settlers had moved into Cedar Hill from various parts of Texas and Arkansas: John Clements (brother-in-law of James Bemis), George Francis (father of General George Bowie), William McConnell (brother-in-law of Alfred Blankenbaker), Ishmael Phelps (son of Abram Phelps), and Nicholas Wills (cousin of Daniel Boone). In 1841 Gouverneur Kenedy founded Kenedy's cattle drive across central Texas which brought many new settlers to the area. One such settler was David Ladd who purchased 640 acres east of present day Cedar Hills along TX 9 for $2 per acre ($40 per square mile). Ladd made his home at "Ladd's Ranch" which he built on a flat piece of land that serviced as his ranch house until it burned down in 1925. From this location he could survey all around his property holdings including what would eventually become present day Cedar Hills; he also started building his own homes there. In 1846 Jno Easley arrived in Cedar Hill from Lexington, Kentucky with his wife Anna Maria Pemberton and their four children: Abraham Pemberton Jr., Julia Elizabeth Easley Pemberton (later Mrs. Wiley Austin Moorehead), Issac Newton Pemberton (later Governor Pinkney)). Jno began working on an irrigation project for Judge Jubb & Sons one year later having saved enough money while living off the grid to do so full time - something that would be repeated many times over during his career as an entrepreneur within Tex sorrounding communities like San Antonio and Houston where he developed numerous businesses including a flour mill & laundryry business called The Mills; timber sales & lumber interests including tracts near Pasadena & Clear Lake; real estate development interests such as The Oaks sectional school district #1B outside San Antonio; manufacturing interests such as carpetswashing machines becoming known as "Jno's Machine Shop"; retail operations such as meatpacking plants becoming known as "Pine Street Grocery". Anna Maria Pemberton died after giving birth to her son Isaac Newton Pemberton Jr.. On December 12th 1850 Anna Maria married another man named Hiram Bowen III who bore her three children--Hiram Bowen IV(1851-1929) Alice May Bowen(1853-)and Franklin Polk Bowen(1855-)--but no issue remained behind after AnnaMaria’s death except Franklin Polk who remarried 2 years later to Emma Mooney Beaumanoir but they too had no children together and went their separate ways thereafter leaving Elmira behind with just 3 cows plus Alma whom they raised until she passed away in 1949 aged 94 years old - making her oldest living relative still alive!
