The company soon became one of Texas’ leading coffee houses and enjoyed continued success until it merged with J&J Coffee Co., Inc., which moved its headquarters to Dallas in 1954. The legacy of Carrollton coffee continues today as one of Texas’ most popular small batch coffee brands. It is located on a bend in the Brazos River and along Interstate 10. The area around Carrollton has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 3,000 years. In 1836, James Carroll traveled through this area and decided to establish a town here. He named it after himself and his brother-in-law John Fenton. The first settlers arrived in 1839 and by 1840 there were over 100 people living in Carrollton. By 1861, when Texas became an independent country, Carrollton had a population of 1,500 people. The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location on I-10 and its access to education and industry. In 1927, the City Council voted to annex additional land from Houston County so that Carrollton would have more room to grow without being taxed too much likeHouston did.
