Carrollton, Texas is a small town located in Medina County, Texas. The population was 2,002 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit which passed through the area on their way to Mexico City during the American Civil War. The first settlers in Carrollton were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who arrived in 1851. The town was formally incorporated on December 1, 1882. It became an independent municipality when it joined Medina County. In 1912 it experienced its first tornado outbreak when seven homes and two businesses were destroyed by a storm that touched down near town. During the 1930s and 1940s, Carrollton grew rapidly due to its manufacturing base of automobiles and other products related to automotive production. However, World War II led to a downturn in the local economy as many of Carrollton's workers went into military service or left for war-time jobs outside of Texas. This caused some social changes which continue into the present day; for example, women began working alongside men in factories beginning in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Today, Carrollton is one of America's fastest-growing towns with a population growth rate of over 7%. In 1836, the town of Carrollton was founded on a small farm by John Carroll. The town grew quickly and by 1840, it had a population of 350 people. By 1845, the population had grown to 1,000 people and in 1850, the town became an incorporated municipality. In 1865, the town annexed the village of Springdale. The annexation created a combined population of 2,500 people. In 1870, the towns merged to form one municipality with a total population of 6,000 people. The municipality dissolved in 1970 and Carrollton reverted back to its original name of John Carrolltown.
