This led to The Herald-Tribune becoming one of the most popular newspapers in town. In 1978, Hirsch donated his entire estate - including his entire fleet of submarines - to Carrollton for use as an aquatic center! Carrollton is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Carrollton was established on April 14, 1868. The present town was named after General James K. Polk, who served as US President from 1849 to 1853 and as Commander-in-Chief of the American Expedition against Mexico in 1846-47. Carrollton began as a small farming community located along the Southwestern Railway near what is now Slaughter Road (U.S.-Route 287). By 1889, when the railroad became part of the Union Pacific Railroad system, a small general store and several farmhouses had been built there; by 1895 these had all been destroyed by fire. A new small store opened in 1903 and continued to be used until 1959 when it burned down also. A post office called Carrollton was established on December 7, 1907; it was discontinued due to lack of residents in 1907 and its successor received its current name on January 8, 1908. In 1916 Confederate veteran John Epps founded an African American grocery business here which he ran until his death in 1951; it remains one of only a few African American businesses still operating today in Tarrant County outside Arlington or Dallas county proper. In 1934 local school board member JT Hill sponsored passage of Texas Education Code §2107 which allowed for public schools in unincorporated areas within Tarrant County subject to state regulation; this led to creation of what is now Highland Oaks Independent School District (HOOD) within Carrollton limits through annexation by Highland Oaks Township #1 following a referendum held that year. At first HOOD operated only inside Highland Oaks Home Rule Municipality boundaries but then expanded into neighboring townships including Arvada (#3), Plano (#5), Garland (#6), Denton (#11) and Tyler#12 during the late 1960s through 1970s under Superintendent Edna Bowser with additional instruction available at Love Field High School adjacent to I-35W exit 20 eastbound off ramp onto Loop 5E before rejoining HOOD across Loop 5E southbound back onto I - 35W . In 1999 Arvada Township annexed portions of Garland Township #6 reaching an enrollment total exceeding 910 students for both schools while Plano Township annexed portions of Denton Township #11 reaching an enrollment total exceeding 350 students for both schools combined – making Carrollton one large school district with two separately constituted high Schools plus Kindergarten thru 12th grade dual instruction atLove Field High School having over 1100 students.). Carrollton is a city in Grayson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Carrollton was David J. Forrest, who arrived in 1851. He named his new land "Carrollton" after his brother-in-law, James W. Carroll Jr., who had come to Texas earlier that year from Kentucky with his family. The first store and school were built on what is now South First Street near Springdale Road in 1865 by local citizens under the leadership of Mayor Isiah Peebles. In 1873, John Wesley Hogg founded the town politics magazine "Hogg's Weekly Republican". A post office was established at Carrollton in 1876 and remained open until 1901 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail service from Grayson County. The first grocery store opened in 1888 and continued to operate until 1951 when it closed because of World War II destruction of many businesses downtown during the war effort; however, most stores reopened soon thereafter as people returned to their pre-war habits of shopping there for goods unavailable during wartime shortages elsewhere). Carrollton is located in Austin, Texas and has been a part of the city for over 50 years. The area that now makes up Carrollton was once a slave township. In 1836, General Sam Houston granted land to John Bitton and others in what would become Carrollton. The town started as a small agricultural community with around 60 residents. By 1860, the population had increased to 350 people and the town began to develop into a center for cotton production and local trade. In 1865, the Texas Railroad Company was organized and began construction on a line from Dallas to Austin. This line would connect Carrollton with other surrounding towns, such as Manorville and Friendswood. The railroad company soon became very important to the town as it allowed for more commerce and transportation within the community. Many businesses were built near the railroad tracks which helped make Carrollton one of the most lively cities in Austin at this time. The first professional school in Austin was established in 1870 in what would become known as White Hall School. This school offered education for children of all social classes including those who could not afford government schools or private schools. After several years of operation, White Hall School closed its doors due to lack of students although it did serve as an inspiration for later educational institutions such as UT Austin’s Woodbury School which opened in 1881). After White Hall School closed, many parents looked towards nearby Lamar University which offered rigorous academic programs that were not available at their home schools. In 1872, Lamar University changed its name to UTAustin when it moved from San Antonio into new facilities on Commerce Street near today’s Westlake Village neighborhood (this area now includes much of Downtown Austin). In 1876-77, UTAustin hosted botha Pan American Exposition called “The Great Exhibition” and also participated in NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament where they finished 3rd behind Baylor & TCU (today’s Rice University). These events helped promote university growth within the community while also providing some much-needed financial stability for local businesses during these difficult times (). UTAustin continued growing rapidly after becoming an institution with many prominent alumni including future Presidents Lyndon Johnson (1948-1953) and Richard Nixon (1946-1951). As UTAustin grew more popular among students and professors alike, so too did its economy; resulting in numerous industrial companies being founded within walking distance of campus such as IBM World Headquarters (), Dell Computers (), Texaco oil refinery ()and Motorola MotoG3 ().
