Carrollton was founded on February 14, 1879 by prospectors John W. Carroll and James A. Robertson as a trading post on the banks of the Trinity River. The post served as a center for trade with Native Americans and Mexicans before it became an agricultural center during the late 19th century. The first major development in Carrollton occurred in 1902 when J.W. Hill & Sons constructed an oil well near what is now downtown Carrollton to exploit shale resources nearby. By 1907, oil production had increased sufficiently to warrant construction of a refinery and town hall at what is now Quaker Hill Road and Commerce Drive (now Daley Plaza). In 1915, the name of the town changed from "Carrollton" to "Dallas". In 1917, wealthy businessman Sam Walton established his retail store Walmart on Interstate 30 near present day Fair Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois (then part of Dallas County) – one of few stores open during World War I that did not close due to wartime output restrictions set by President Woodrow Wilson's New Deal agenda. After Walmart's opening, other retailers followed suit throughout North Texas; this stimulated economic growth and led to additions such as restaurants and theaters along commerce Drive over time (see also: White Settlement). Carroll settled in what is now Carrollton with his family following his victory over Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek Bridge on April 14 that year.
