Canyon is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1885 by pioneers from Colorado and named for Canyon Creek, located east of the community. Canyon first saw development as a small agricultural community with two storehouses and a few homes. A post office was established in 1886, and the town gradually grew to include an enrollment of 100 residents by 1900. In 1912, Canyon joined the Amarillo- McLennan Regional Airport District; it remains part of that agency today. In 1924, local ranchers formed the Canyon Ranching Company to purchase large tracts of land surrounding Canyon; they began production of beef and other livestock products there until 1976.
