Canyon, Texas is a small town in the Midwestern United States. It is located on the border of San Antonio and Austin metropolitan areas. The population was 4,852 at the 2010 census. Canyon is named after a narrowing canyon that runs through its eastern edge. The first settlers in what would become Canyon were farmers who arrived in 1836. They started out farming land near Mission Trails Road and Rancho Rincon de Santa Anna. In 1848, they acquired 640 acres of land east of present-day Canyon on the banks of the Colorado River. They named their new community "Canon City" in honor of Canon George Washington Smith, an American doctor and member of Congress from Indiana who had come to live in this area as part of his missionary work among Native Americans. The first post office was established at Canon City on July 1, 1850. In 1860, John Tuggle purchased 640 acres west of Canyon along parts of present-day Interstate 10 for $1 per acre (the equivalent amount today). This ranch became known as Hacienda Tuggle which was later sold to Edwin Hubble for $14 million in 1923. At this time, canonical city consisted onlyof about 100 people living on 12 miles (19 km) wide strip along riverbank with access only by boat or foot during low water times; it became very difficult to grow crops because there was no irrigation system available at that time

Canyon, Texas is located in Hudspeth County, Texas and was founded on December 12, 1879. Canyon is named for a canyon in New Mexico Territory which was the site of a major battle between United States forces and Mexican forces. The battle occurred on November 27, 1847. The town of Canyon was founded in 1881 by James W. Buchanan and his wife Anna Vinson Buchanan. It served as the county seat from 1886 to 1888. In 1907 it became the capital of Hudspeth County when Austin became the state capital. On November 30, 1916, President Wilson delivered a speech at Canyon called "The American Revolution: Its Significance Today." During World War II it played an important role as a naval training center with its shipyards producing ships for both America and Japan. According to the 2010 census, the population of Canyon is 4700 people.
Canyon, Texas was first settled by the Comanches in 1824. The town was established on the banks of the Grande Cache River. It prospered because of its trade with Mexico and Mexican traders. In 1854, Canyon became a part of the Mexican Republic and became an important trading post between that country and United States. The town slowly declined during the late 19th century as ranching took over much of its economy. However, it regained some significance during World War II when Chandler Air Force Base (now Chandler Field) was located in Canyon.
