Canyon, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The town was founded in 1881 by the merger of two other towns, Canyon and San Angelo. In 1916, the name change to Canyon City after the creation of a new county seat for Hudspeth County. As of 2010, Canyon had a population of 707 residents. The history of Canyon begins with its founding as two small villages – one called Pinos Altos and the other called San Angelo – within what is now Hudspeth County. However, when Hudspeth County was created in 1916, both villages were combined into one municipality and renamed Canyon City. Today, canyon city is home to the only post office in that county and its ZIP code is 87025. The first people who lived in what is now Canyon were hunters and gatherers who hunted game along the rivers that flowed through their area. Over time, these people became more sophisticated and started trading with other communities in centralTexas for goods such as water supplies and land. By 1881, there were already some businesses functioning in this new town which began to grow rapidly due to its location near major transportation routes. The early years of canyon city’s existence were very difficult because it was surrounded by hostile Indian tribes who constantly threatened to drive out all those living hereabouts. To survive against these threats, the government made it a priority to build up defenses around this small community including building walls around it and erecting fortifications inside it itself. This dedication did wonders for morale within canyon city as well as providing enough resources to support its growing population during tough times! In 1916, after years of hard work by various individuals and organizations responsible for its development (most notably the Commonwealth Club), canyon city became an official county seat for Hudspeth County! At that time it also boasted some unique features which set it apart from other rural counties in our state: It had an elected Mayor/Council system which allowed citizens wide participation in local decisions; It had open-air markets where farmers could sell their produce; And Finally It housed a jail which helped keep criminals incarcerated while they awaited trial or punishment!
