Canyon, Texas is a small town located in Vernon County, Texas. The population was 1,738 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Amarillo-Texarkana, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Canyon were the Comanches and Kiowa Indians. They were followed by Anglo settlers in 1851. By 1870, all but one of Canyon's ten families had left for other parts of Texas because of Indian Wars and various disputes with the Mexican government over land grants and hunting rights. In 1876, John Cargill founded Cargill beef cattle operations in this region which remain today an important economic force in Canyon. In 1907, railroad construction began through Vernon County; the canyon became an important staging area for freight trains running between Amarillo and Wichita Falls. The post office was established at Canyon on October 16th, 1907. Afternoon sun baked residents who tried to get around town's narrow streets during hotter months; by 1913 it had become so difficult to do business that mail was delivered overnight to Wichita Falls instead The first school in Canyon opened on February 14th, 1908; it served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until 1915 when a new high school building (now called Parkview Elementary) was built across the street from the old schoolhouse. That same year also saw the opening of what would become known as "the most famous attraction in Canyon", Crystal Palace Park: a 26 acre open air amusement park featuring rides such as Ferris wheel and coconut shell showboat ride which drew more than 100 people daily from miles around during its heyday in 1925-1927 In 1927 local rancher Waddell Stephenson donated land east of town along FM 965 for a state sponsored agricultural research center named after him - University Creek Ranch State College Today's University Creek Ranch State University opened its doors on September 15th 1941 with thirty-two students enrolled initiallyserving primarily agriculture subject areas including horticulture and animal husbandry however now includes fourteen faculties comprising eighteen departments including Veterinary Medicine & Veterinary Surgery

Canyon, Texas is a small city in the Panhandle of Texas. The population was 5,876 at the 2010 census. Canyon has been home to pioneer families since 1859 and the first school was built in 1865. The cotton fields that once thrived around Canyon now are gone, but the city still experiences a significant amount of growth due to its location within commuting distance for many businesses and residents. Canyon's history is closely intertwined with that of its neighboring town of Lubbock. Together they have experienced some of the most dramatic changes in their local community over time: from tiny settlement to bustling metropolis; from agricultural goods dealing store and feeder service to container port; from an agricultural center dependent on irrigation canals to one today characterized by resurgent oil production and new development initiatives. The first inhabitants of what is now Canyon were farmers who arrived in 1859 during the Mexican-American War when General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna invaded Texas. After defeating Mexico at Palo Alto, he reached what is now canyon near present day Lubbock after traveling through much of West Texas along his route leading southward into New Mexico Territory. From here he began construction on his ill-fated Adobe Walls Campaign which aimed unsuccessfully (and unsuccessfully) to drive out Mexican forces from northern San Antonio County interior areas before turning north towards Amarillo under flag authority into what became Austin County in February 1861. Santa Anna's campaign served as an early warning system for Union forces besieging Fort Worth while also providing Confederate forces with line-of-sight access across Central Texas should they attempt an amphibious assault against Union positions at Dallas or San Jacinto Heights (now Houston). Lopez de Santa Anna had originally intended to establish himself as governor of all TX., but upon learning about UT's secession from Mexico, decided instead to march southward towards Austin and take up arms against Anglo settlers there - only later realizing that this would constitute direct conflict with UT's newly designated governing body known as the Republic of Bexar (later renamed Austin). When news arrived back east that Lopez de Santa Anna had failed to capture any major cities or districts within TX., President Abraham Lincoln ordered Ulysses S Grant into action on April 20th 1861 via telegraph order #14056 which called for a combined force totaling 1,500 men under Major General Don Carlos Eberhart commanding units expected offriver at Corpus Christi & Refugio Pass regarding possible Confederate attempts Unlawfully To Cross Rio Grande River Without Permission Of United States Governer!
