In Burleson, Texas, policemen gift history is long and proud. The first policeman in the town was Hudson Jeffries. He joined the Mexican Army during the Mexican-American War and then served with the U.S. military in World War I. After the war, he returned to Burleson and started a patrol department. In 1922, he married Lillie Mae Boyd and they began having children. In 1935, Jeffries was appointed captain of Burleson’s police department and he led the department until his death in 1968. While captain, Jeffries delivered lectures on law enforcement to high schools across Texas. One of his most famous lectures was “The Lawyer as Policeman: A Study in Ethics” which discussed how to be a good cop without being corrupt or Vengeance mad (Jeffries had been accused of murder). After Captain Jeffries’ death, his son Hudson Jr took over as captain until 1985 when he became mayoralty candidate for Burleson and lost to incumbent Donny Greene Sr.. From 1986-1988 Mayoralty Candidate Donny Greene Sr ran unopposed against incumbent state Rep Donna Moreno but lost due to term limits set by the Texas State Legislature at that time. In 1990 businessman Jerry Hargrave donated $10,000 to help finance an election campaign for Mayoralty Candidate Donny Greene Sr., who won handily against Moreno with nearly 60% of the vote cast! Burleson, Texas is a city located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex of Texas. The population was 463,451 as of the 2010 census. The company built a new headquarters park on Commerce Street that still stands today. In 1957, Baylor University opened its first campus in Burleson when it moved from Waco, Texas. The university has since expanded several times with campuses in Garland (1988), Mesquite (2003), Round Rock (2006) and Austin (2015). Burleson is a small town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Burleson was founded in 1876 by cattlemen who arrived from Kansas City. The town developed as an agricultural center and Today it is a bedroom community for the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The first settlers in what is now Burleson were two families of Wichita Indians who came to the area in 1876. They named their new settlement after General James Pemberton's post on the Red River near modern-day Wichita Falls, Texas. The Pembertons had come to Texas from Missouri during the American Civil War and had beenaya ( interpreter) for General Sam Houston's army at San Jacinto Battlefield. In 1887,burleson post office opened under mail route KS 527 south of present day Plano and included portions of present day Wise and Denton counties.
