In addition to its role as a port of entry for goods coming from Mexico and Central America, Burleson also served as a staging ground for battles during the American Civil War. As war turned into conflict, burlesonians began to accumulate ever-more complex military weaponry and equipment. One such individual who contributed significantly to this growth was Captain John H. Witherspoon. A native of Scotland, Witherspoon had been born in 1824 and arrived in Texas in 1855. He quickly become involved with the civilian life of Burleson, serving as mayor (1858-59) and councilman (1860-62). During these years he acquired an impressive collection of weapons and armor, which he later donated to the local museum. Witherspoon's donation wasn't the only notable military donation made byBurlesonians during this time period. In 1862, Major General James Fenton purchased one thousand acres northwest of town from José Cámpora for $1 million dollars. This land would serve as Fenton's new homebase for operations within Texas Cavalry Regiment #4BTN/10AO2 (later known as The Texans). It is through Fenton that we first encounter the term "burlesonite" - a derogatory term used against Texan troops stationed abroad who were not up to par on combat standardsnotationally speaking (= "not black"). In 1865, Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sibley Purchased 5000 acres southeast of town from José Castro for $5 million dollars - making it one of the largest donations any individual has ever made to a TX military unit(s). This purchase allowed Sibley to expand his ranching operations deep into present day Flores County; He also began construction on what would eventually become Fort Worth Military Academy (now Ft Worth University), which opened its doors in 1870 under his leadership. Burleson is a city in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,864 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The city is named for General James Burleson and his family who donated land to make it a town. The first post office was established in Burleson on November 15, 1881. The first settler in what is now Burleson was John Pemberton who arrived from Illinois on October 12th, 1881. Pemberton built his house on the east side of town over a small stream called "Pemberton's Prairie." He also ran a gristmill and wagon road across the creek that later became US 90. In 1903, Drury Wagon Works LLC started manufacturing wagons here. In 1915, J C Lamb began operating an ice cream parlor and Cafe du Lac which remain open to this day and are still considered some of the most popular tourist spots in town today! In 1922, Harry Ladd opened up his grocery store and continued to operate it until he tragically died in 1984. Mrs Ladd then continued running the store until her death in 1997! On July 20th 1895 James E Wilson married Evalyn Gentry (born 1886) at First Baptist Church located within walking distance from where she had been born just two years earlier! They would have four children together: James Edward Wilson (1902-1982), Gladys Alice Wilson (1904-1991), Edwin Vernon Wilson (1907-1996) and Pamela Joye Wilson (baptized December 6th 1909). Evalyn did not want her children raised with their father's alcoholics business practices so she brought them all into godliness under Pastor Averill Hargrave baptized them Pentecostalists! Burleson is a small town in Texas, located just east of Amarillo. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Nacogdoches Metropolitan Statistical District. The first people to live in what is now Burleson were ranchers and farmers who came down from the hills around San Angelo. In 1866, Colonel James Huggins founded Huggins Oil and Gas Company, which became one of the largest oil companies in Texas. The company developed an extensive gas production program in eastern Texas. In 1926, General George Custer died during his attempt to cross the Great Plains into Mexico on horseback. His remains were brought back to Burleson and buried there with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. After his death, many people in America felt that he had been cheated out of his proper due process by Mexico. Consequently, they began a campaign demanding compensation from Mexico for Custer's death. In 1951, local businessmen donated land to the city of Amarillo for use as an airport expansion project; this area eventually became Burleson Airport (IATA: BRL). The airport was opened on December 12, 1954 by Mayor Tilton Burton along with other new facilities including a fire station and police substation. Burleson has always been an agricultural community with a predominant focus on cotton farming and haymaking; however, over time it has become increasingly industrialized with heavy employment within the petroleum industry and related businesses since World War II. Today Burleson is known as one of the most important centres for manufactured goods distribution in central Texas because its location allows easy access to major transportation corridors such as I-10 and US-191
