Burleson, Texas is a small town located in the central part of Texas. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Burleson County. The city of Burleson was founded in 1887 by John W. Norris and became an incorporated municipality in 1907.
The first white person to live in what is now Burleson County was James Crain, who settled there in 1827. A post office called notation did not open until May 1, 1875, and remained open only five months before it was closed due to lack of mail shipments.
In 1902, citizens of Fort Worth petitioned statehood and were given permission to form a new municipal government within their own limits; however, because Fort Worth had already annexed much of East Texas (including present-day Brazoria County), the request for Burleson incorporation was refused on the grounds that it would create another municipality within Fort Worth's boundaries without any corresponding representation fromBurleson residents. In 1906, a group of dissatisfied burlesonsiders formed their own organization known as "The Citizens' Committee for Independent Municipalities" and lobbied successfully for incorporation into the new Fort Worth government; accordingly, on November 3rd Burleson became an independent municipality with its own police force and budget. After becoming an independent municipality,Burleson began to experience rapid growth due to its location nearFort Worth and its access to highway 101 which made it easy for businesses to relocate there without leaving their homes.
