Burleson is a town in Brewster County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1872 by John W. Burleson and his family. It is named after General Sam Houston. The first post office in Burleson was established in 1872 and functioned for two years before being closed due to lack of stamps. In 1875, the town purchased its first deed of grant from President Ulysses S. Grant. The town's name originated with General Sam Houston, who donated land to the village for a public square and cemetery. In 1886, John W. Burleson organized a group of farmers to purchase 190 acres (71 ha) of land east of the present-day town center for $5 per acre ($100 total). This initial parcel would eventually become known as "Burleson Park."
