As of 2010, Burleson had a population of 102,521 people. The city was founded by J.B. Burleson in 1867 as a result of an effort to make land available for cattle drives through his rancho de la Barca area between Lubbock and Amarillo. The town grew rapidly due to railroad ties being laid throughout the region for cattle shipping and other purposes, as well as its location on the Chisholm Trail which connected Fort Worth with Dallas/Fort Worth Municipal Airport outside Arlington Heights, Illinois (now Irving). In 1907, Burleson was renamed after John Broughton, 1st Baron Broughton who had been made Viscount Cranborne at Queen Victoria's accession in 1887 during her Coronation year; this title had been created on 2 November 1886 when he succeeded his father as 5th Baronet Broughton-Draper from his uncle Sir John Draper-Broughton (1814-1901).
