Burleson, Texas is a city in Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 696 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The city's name comes from Spanish for "the beautiful woodlands." The first settlement in what became Burleson was made by Anglo-Saxon settlers on the Brazos River in 1827. A post office called Goliad was established in 1840, and Burleson incorporation took place on March 15, 1851. In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg skirmished with Union forces near present-day Burleson; as a result, many local citizens joined the Confederacy and some stores and businesses closed their doors during the war. In 1865, cattle drives brought American livestock to this region and soon a herd of Hereford horses were being sold at auction in town square. By 1880 there were six general stores and seventy-six agricultural products dealers along U.S.-Mexico Road 3 south of town center - all of which remain open today except for one (Bryan Farms). When oil began production in North Dakota back east in 1901 it quickly spread throughout Texas and Burleson became an important stop along the Interstate 20 corridor before reachingTexarkana early enough to contribute its share to that boomtown's fortunes as well. Many residents who had grown prosperous working at various downtown businesses fled when Texarkana boomed but returned when petroleum prices went down during World War II; they built homes around Midtown Boulevard until that area too became overwhelmed by development later on. Burleson is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1892 by John H. Burleson and named for him. The first post office opened in 1893. In 1899, the town acquired its own water supply from an underground well and renamed it after Houston lawyer General Sam Houston Burleson. The city was incorporated on November 14, 1910. It became a municipal district on January 1, 1912 and became a full-fledged municipality on December 21 of that year. On July 16, 1916 the City of Dallas annexed part of Burleson's territory to form a new city called Love Field which had a population of 12,000 residents at the time (it would eventually grow to over 20,000). In 1931–1932 three floods destroyed much of downtown and many homes; however market redevelopment quickly replaced most destroyed buildings with new structures built closer to stores located near Interstate 35W (the current I-35W/Uptown Expressway). This development has helped contribute to the present day skyline view from downtown as well as increased economic activity within the city limits since then due to access to interstate highways and more businesses located nearby
Burleson began as a small community in the eastern part of Texas in 1879. It was named for General Sam Houston, who had come to Texas in 1845 and founded the Republic of Texas. The town grew rapidly after cotton plantations were developed there and by 1907 it had a population of 2,000. In 1915, Burleson became an independent city and has continued to grow since then.
