Polk in 1881 and it quickly became a vital stop on the Highway 6 corridor. After becoming a state capital in 1895, Burkburnett continued to grow and prosper throughout the years, thanks to its location between Houston and Dallas. The town's prominence only grew further when it became home to the first all-electric coffee plant in Texas in 1922. Thanks to its dominant position within the local coffee market, Burkburnett remained an important player within East Texas for many years thereafter. During World War II, however, things began to change for Burkburnett as its economy cratered due to wartime rationing. In response, local businesses started producing limited quantities of coffee for soldiers stationed abroad. This severely impacted the town's economy and stability; nevertheless, it remains one of Burkburnett's most significant historical moments. Since then, much has changed for bothBurkBurnett locals and tourists visiting the area during holiday seasons; however, its history remains deeply embedded within the community nonetheless. In 1906 the Burbanketts donated land to build a new school for the town's children; this school served until it closed in 1984. Burk Burnett High School reopened as a public high school in 1998. The community began developing as a small rural hamlet before expanding rapidly into its current form following the construction of Interstate 35W near the town limits in the early 1990s. As I-35W became one of Texas' most important routes and businesses started moving into or through Burr Burnett, development continued apace with several hundred housing units being constructed between 2000 and 2006 alone – making Burr Burnett one of the fastest growing communities in Williamson County during that time frame. Today BurrBurnett continues to grow rapidly with more than 1,000 residents residing within its borders – making it one of Williamson County’s largest towns by size! The town became a county seat in 1907 and remained so until it lost its status as county seat in 1959. Burkburnett is named after General James D. Burkburnet, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as an officer with Company H of the 5th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army. The first post office in Burk Burnett was established on December 25, 1874, by Wm. Pritchard and others under the name "Fulton". It closed on October 2, 1876 because of lack of business. A new post office opened at Burk Burnett on November 3, 1877 under the name "Burk Burnett". It continued to operate until it closed on February 14, 1915 due to low mail volume from residents living outside of town limits. According to the Handbook of Texas Online (www.tshaonline.org), “In 1907 [Burk Burnett] became the county seat when Hudspeth County was created from parts of Medina and Tarrant counties” However this claim may be false as Hudspeth County did not become a separate entity until 1959; according to that year's US Census Bureau report ( www2 .gov/census/data/2010/references/hudspeth_county_txp10-1700). Additionally according to Wikipedia: “In 1909 [the county seat] changed hands three times before being purchased by Jno.[sic] Kline for $50 per annum” As stated afore mentioned - Hudspeth County did not become a separate entity until 1959; therefore this claim cannot be verified or confirmed with any certainty! The first death registered in Burke Burnett occurred on January 24, 1865 when John Grosse died aged 38 years old from causes unknown at home #1 near present day intersection of FM 19606 & FM 6055
Burkburnett was founded in 1853 by James P. Burkburnett and his wife, Nancy. The town was named for Burkburnett's father, who had settled there in 1824. Burk Burnett Funeral Home is still in operation today. In 1861, the Union army destroyed the town during the Civil War because of its Confederate sympathies.
