Burkburnett, Texas is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 897 at the 2010 census. Burkburnett is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The city was named for Wm. Burkitt, a landowner and politician who served as mayor of San Antonio from 1884 to 1886. The first settlers in what is now Burkburnett were people who came overland from Louisiana in 1836. They named their town after William Burkitt, an early settler and delegate to the Mexican Congress who helped negotiate the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War. In 1868, James Fenimore Cooper published his novel "The Great Republic", which set forth events in America during Reconstruction following the Civil War. When he wrote about American Indians living near him on his rancho (property), Cooper's neighbor John Wesley Powell decided to write about them too and name his new discovery for himself: "Burkburnett" after Wm.'s old home town in Louisiana where he had been born and raised. In 1907, Japhet Sells founded Dallas Air Lines Ltd., one of the largest carriers then operating outside of North America. He wanted Dallas to be known as "the air capital of the world." Burkburnett is a town in Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It was named for Colonel James Burkburnet, an officer of the Texas Rangers. Burkburnett was platted in 1887 and became a post office in 1889. The first store in town opened on Main Street. In 1902, cowboys of the rancho El Paso Adobe located two miles east of town began to range west and south through what is now Burkburnett Rancho before finally settling there around 1901. By 1912 most of present-day Burkburnet had been established when J.D. Hinton homesteaded just north of the railroad tracks on what would become Elmendorf Road (now US 95). A school built by Mrs. Hinton soon followed; it served grades one through five until transferred to Nacogdoches High School in 1916 when that school burned down during World War I and again from 1918 to 1921 due to lack of money; during that time only second grade classes were conducted here since no other school could be constructed nearby at that point in history! In 1919 Captain Edward Ritchie founded the Tama County Republican Club which met at the home of John Smeaton until 1928 when it moved into its current location on Main Street opposite Pecan Grove Baptist Church which still stands today as a contributing property to Burkburnett Village today! From 1930-1935 he also served as Mayor with Harry Lee Waugh as his DeputyMayor! In 1935 Burbankett's first high school graduating class was composed of 10 students who went on to attend Nacogdoches High School where they remained until 1949 when their building burned down again!! Finally after years long effort by several individuals including Superintendent Floyd Kline Jr., Mr./Mrs/Grammarly Collins donated land adjacent to Elmendorf Road between US 95 and FM 936 for construction of our current high school we received approvals from both state officials and city zoning officials back in May 2009 making this possible once again THANKSGIVING CEREMONY!!!! We are extremely excited about this new beginning for our community!!!
