Burkburnett, Texas is a small agricultural town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,823 at the 2000 census. The community was named for General James Burkburnett who fought in the Mexican-American War. Burkburnett was also the site of the first post office in Hudspeth County. The city of Burkburnett began as a settlement on what is now State Highway 361. On January 1, 1870, it became a town when residents of neighboring towns voted to incorporation into a new municipality. At its peak population in 1890, Burkburnet had a school and six stores. By 1910, however, most of the businesses had closed and the population had dwindled to 527 people. In 1925 Burbank Burnett opened an all-purpose store on Main Street serving as the first such business in that region. That same year saw another milestone when the first phone system were installed in town limits. At its height during World War II there were 11 businesses active withinBurkburnett limits; five of which operated successfully until they went out of business due to wartime shortages or other factors.
