The Burkburnett Air Force Base was the first airbase in the Texas Air Defense District. It was activated on December 8, 1941. The base became an operational military installation on February 2, 1942 when it became a Major Command Base (MCOB) of the Second Air Force. On February 23, 1942, it was redesignated as the First Tactical Aerospace Division (1 TAD) and activated as 1st Tactical Fighter Wing at Randolph AFB, Texas. On July 15, 1945 Headquarters USAF assigned 1 TFW to RAF Lakenheath Station UK for operations during World War II as part of Operation Overlord. Inactivated on September 2, 1945. Inactivated on October 15th 1946 when all commands were transferred from Fort Worth to Fort Worth Municipal Airport Discontinued flying on November 15th 1946 and all assets were turned over to the City of Fort Worth which still uses portions of the base today including K-3A maintenance hangar/ barracks complex and parking lot #5 where CF-18 Hornets are stored today. On January 3rd 1951 Brigadier General George Silliman assumed command of 1 TFW effective date thereof and continued operations until its Inactivation upon reorganization under deputy commander level May 6th 1951 with headquarters at Grand Prairie AFB TX.. Brigadier General Silliman served as Commander while stationed at Grand Prairie AFB until his death in office on August 28th 1957. The wing's lineage can be traced back to February 8th 1942 when First Tactical Aerospace Division (1 TAD) was activated at Randolph AFB with headquarters located there until its Inactivation upon reorganization under deputy commander level May 6th 1951 with headquarters at Grand Prairie AFB TX..

The Burkburnett Air Force Base gift history dates back to 1947 when the wing was activated as a branch of the Air Force. The base has since grown and changed, becoming an important part of the USAF. The wing currently has several thousand active duty military members and civilian employees who work at the base. In 2017, Burkburnett AFB became home to Texas A&M Aggies football team after they were given permission by then-Air Force Chief Operating Officer LtGen Mike Mullen to move from Kyle Field on Texarkana Army Station to nearbyBurkburnett AFB according to ESPN’s report at that time: "With no other stadium available on Texarkana Army Station for football games (the previous home of Rice University) or for expansion purposes (Texas A&M had applied for multiple expansions at Texarkana Army Station), Mullen approved moving the Aggies from Kyle Field to nearbyBurkburnet AFB." Burkburnett is known for its namesake, Burk Burnett, an American cowboy who rode into history as the first person tocross the Great Plains on horseback. The Burk Burnett Museum and History Center is open every day from 9am to 5pm and features original exhibits about the life of Burk Burnett and his contemporaries. In 1979, the United States Air Force awarded a gift of $5 million to The Boeing Company in memory of General Curtis E. LeMay. This donation was made in order to help support the development and deployment of new strategic bombers by the USAF.
Burkburnett was founded in 1836 by a group of Texans who were looking for a new home. The community was located on the banks of the Brazos River, and its name comes from an early settler, Burk Burnett. The town grew quickly, and by 1840 it had a population of 100 people. By 1850, Burkburnett had more than 1,000 residents. In 1853, the town became the capital of Texas after San Antonio was moved to that location. From here, Governor James K. Polk issued his famous proclamation calling for statehood for Texas on July 6th, 1858. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1870 when it had a population of 513 people. However, due to rapid growth and competition from other towns in the area, Burkburnett eventually fell behind and ceased to exist as an independent municipality within Texas in 1872. Today, only a few buildings from the originaltown remain: The Burnett House is still used as a family home; East Main Street is now known as Main Street Baptist Church; and West First Street is now known as Burkburnett Cemetery
