Bryan, Texas is a small town located in Midland County, Texas. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. The Bryan-Marshall school district serves the town. Bryan is home to the University of Texas at Austin and its main campus. The town was founded by Captain James Marshall in 1851 as Marshall's Station on the Trinity River. In 1892, Bryan became a city and was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman who had visited the area that year. In 1902, it merged with Marshalltown to form Baker City. That same year, construction began on Interstate 35W which connected the east side of town to I-35E in McKinney and eventually led to business expansions for both cities as well as a new high school and arena built for the event called "Bryan Showtime." In 2006, Mayor Whitehead announced plans to build a $60 million arts center that would include an opera house, theater, art gallery and other performance spaces inside an old cotton mill building northeast of town on FM 14062 (now US 1). Construction started in 2007 but stalled due to budget limitations; however it resumed later that year when mayor Whitehead decided to run for re-election on an arts agenda including strategies for getting money from multi-billionaire philanthropist George Soros through development grants rather than taxes hikes needed to finance project costs alone It finally happened in March 2015 when voters approved Measure L funding increasing local sales tax revenue by 1%. The first phase of construction began two weeks later with demolition of some businesses near US Highway 281 before expanding into new areas near Senter Road intersection where Main Street meets I-35W Phase Two included creating new streetscape features such as roundabouts around all intersections while also repairing or replacing several existing streetscapes including 4th Street between US Highway 281/I-35W bridge over Brazos River and Main Streets W & E Work ended February 2017 when contractor workers went back into work onto Phase Three after unexpectedly finding water ingress during excavation
