Military deployed gift history in Bryan, Texas goes back to the early 1800s. A military installation was established at this location in 1847 and named Camp Bowie after General John C. Frémont. The first soldier stationed here was Captain George H. Smith from New York City in 1849. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down the garrison buildings at Camp Bowie after Battle of Fort Sumter. The city of Bryan was founded in 1907 by Colonel Edward J. King with the goal of accommodating a military installation. The first Soldier Detachment arrived here on Sept 9, 1907 and served until October 1st that year when it moved to El Paso County where it remained until 1912 when it returned to Bryan as part of First Troop Infantry Regiment which served until 1915 when it left for Goodyear Air Force Base near Phoenix, Arizona and re-enlisted here on July 15th, 1916 as part of Eighth Cavalry Regiment which served until 1918 before being redesignated Fifth Cavalry Regiment on December 15th 1918 which continued serving until 1920 when it left for Redstone Arsenal northwest Alabama where it remained for the rest of World War I before returning home on November 12th 1921 and re-enlisting as a Cowboy cavalry unit attached to Third Cavalry Regimental Headquarters 3rd Brigade commanded by Major General James Wickersham who stayed here through World War II also serving as Commandant of Goodyear Air Force Base from 1941-1945 prior to his death there in 1945 . In 1951, an airfield was established at this location named Lowry Field after Colonel Lowry who donated land for the project . This airfield became operational on February 16th 1957 under control of the USAF Ninth Air Force (later Tactical Air Command) becoming operational with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft conducting aerial refueling flights over central America during Operation Rolling Thunder . On October 7th 1959 while flying over downtown Dallas during Operation Earthshine , one such Flying Fortress crashed into a building killing all five occupants including colonel Lowry . After this crash, Lowry Field reverted back to its original name Lowry AFB upon its activation .
