The Brownwood Navy League Marine Museum has a maritime history dating back to 1894. The organization was founded by Captain John H. Nolen and Mr. Wm. Foard, both of Brownwood, in order to promote the interests of the navy in town. In 1942, Brownwood became part of Texas during World War II and the local military service began operations as Naval Air Station Mesquite (NAS Mesquite). NAS Mesquite played an important role in Operation Neptune's Spear which was the first major assault against Japan after World War II. It also served as headquarters for Carrier Group 7 until it moved to Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1944. Brownwood residents remember NAS Mesquite with pride and fondness; many still refer to their memories of duty there as "the good old days." In 1995, NAS Mesquite celebrated its centennial with a commemoration ceremony that included a display of antique warships from around the world preserved at NAS Brownsville in Texas City. Today, NAS Brownsville is home to several museums including the USS Constitution Museum and USS Perry Museum which explore naval history from before America's independence through modern times. Two other museums located within walking distance include The Battleship Division Museum (Battleship History & Heritage) and USS Porter Museum (Naval Aviation). The Naval Air Station Annex also contains activities such as air-riding maneuvers, public tours, night sky viewing events and more. As one of only two active decommissioned naval vessels permanently stationed outside of Japan since WW2, USS Porter has been open for visitors annually since 1984!
