Brownwood, Texas is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Brownwood was founded by Texans who were forcibly removed from their homes in 1836 and settled in what is now Tarrant County. The name "Brownwood" comes from the color of the ground where they were first settled - light brown. The early residents of Brownwood were farmers and their families. They raised cotton and cattle and mined coal until railroads came to town in the late 1800s. By 1920, Brownwood had a school system with twenty-one schools and an Employer-Employee Union (EUE) grocery store that served as its primary means of support. In 1940, during World War II, Brownwood became one of thirtyinity towns in Tarrant County when it merged with neighboring Arlington Heights. Most businesses closed during World War II; however, UE reopened after the war and continue to serve as its primary source of income through today. The post office operated until it was discontinued on December 14th, 1957; however, many items such as mail sent to other parts of Texas still arrive here today due to relay service between Brownsville and Fort Worth/Dallas). Although most residents have been working for various companies throughout their lives there are a few people who still live off agriculture or ranching activities which contributes significantly to local economy today There are also several small businesses in town that provide services such as plumbing/electrical work or janitorial services In addition to these small businesses there are also several restaurants and bars which contribute greatly to evening life
Brownwood is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in Comal County. The population was 5,817 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Comal County and most populous municipality within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Brownwood was George Waring who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1827. He named his new town after himself, Brownwood, Indiana. The first post office was established in 1829, and by 1840 there were twenty-four residents living in what became Brownwood. In 1853, David Fenton opened a Stagecoach line from Houston to San Antonio and brought with him two wagonloads of gold nuggets that he had found at an excavation near San Marcos River south of Austin. This event helped to start development of the downtown business district which still exists today as one of the most vibrant areas in town! In 1861 Abraham Lincoln made an address to a group of citizens gathered around Old Wichita Falls Creek where he announced his candidacy for President on November 4th; this address would later become known as "Lincoln's First Inaugural Address". On July 10th, 1865 Union troops raided Brownwood while it was nighttime and stole $10 worth of goods from local merchants including saddles and other equipment used by farmers during their harvest season! This act outraged many people who saw it as yet another example of how slavery had been violated during the Civil War; unfortunately for those protesters, Confederate troops soon surrounded and burned down buildings along Wichita Falls Creek before withdrawing back into Confederate territory
