The city's population rapidly increased during the 20th century as industry left for new opportunities in Japan and other countries. However, World War II led to significant layoffs and families were forced to sell their homes to support the war effort. After the war, many residents turned their attention back to their old hometown, which flourished through several cycles of economic growth until the early 21st century when a recession hit and Housing Authority demolition began reducing property values. In September 2016, Mayor Proctor announced that Brownwood would be closing its doors for good effective January 1st, 2017; however some residents have started working to keep things alive by starting up small businesses or Community Organizations (COs). Brownwood has been home to many famous people including actor Roy Roberts (1907-1994), author Beverly Garland (1945-2002), Congressman Lloyd Doggett (1922-2009) and artist Julie Newmar (brought over from California). For years Brownwood served as a model community for such diverse organizations as Habitat for Humanity International, Kiwanis Club of America and United Way of Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Area Chapter #1 & 2
