Brownwood, Texas is a small town in Robertson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settler in Brownwood was Capt. John Ewing who arrived in 1836 from Ohio. He and his wife Lydia built a log home on what is now the east side of Main Street. This location became known as "The Grove" because it was used as a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Dallas and Fort Worth. After Captain Ewing's death in 1838 his wife moved to Brownsville with their two children (John and Jemima) but continued to live here until her death in 1850. In 1849, JF Hutchins bought land west of Brownwood from Captured Men Creek Indian Tribe member David Silliman for $735 worth of goods including horses, cattle, corn and other items needed for farming. Hutchins named his new settlement "Brownwood". In 1870 he sold the town to Alexander Hays who renamed it "Haleyville" after himself and son James Haley (1821-1893). A post office called Brownwood was established at this location on March 25, 1872; it closed on July 3, 1946 due to lack of business activity. In 1916 an oil well started production near Haleyville; because of this development the community began gaining attention as a trade center for all things oil related. The boomtown quickly transformed into a residential area during World War II when many local citizens enlisted in the military or worked as engineers or scientists involved in war efforts such as Shell Oil Company'sTexaco Refinery project at Lubbock (now Midland), also located just outside Haleyville limits. However by 1945 most residents had returned home following the war and Haleyville slowly declined throughout the 1970s until it died altogether within Reachout Trucking Inc.'s facilities situated off FM 527 about 2 miles northeast of town limits late last year . . .
Brownwood was founded by John Brown in 1836. The town was named after the U.S. state of Texas, which Brown had served as a military commander during the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s, and by 1851 it had acquired a white population of 100 residents. In 1857, Brownwood became an independent municipality, and in 1861 it joined the Union side in the American Civil War. After the war, the town expanded rapidly into what is now eastern Riverside County. In 1924, Brownwood merged with nearby Dallas to form a new city known as Dallas–Fort Worth.
