The town was named for John Brown, an American who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then become a cattle rancher in nearby San Antonio. The town began to grow rapidly after they opened up land to farming and ranching near its center. In 1840, Brownwood became the county seat of Travis County. In 1851, John Witherspoon sold his interest in Baylor University (now Baylor School of Law) for $2 million dollars which set off a chain reaction that would lead to such great success for Baylor University – one that continues today! One reason why this university has been so successful is because it attracted top talent from all over America as well as from other parts of Europe! Continued growth led to increased demand for land which necessitated additional development east of downtown Brownwood – including what is now known as “The Strip” area where many large box stores and resorts were located during the late 20th century and into the 21st century. One aspect that makes Brownsville unique is that it has seen several different waves of immigrants come through its doors over time: Germans (1890-1910), Italians (1920-1950), Japanese Americans (1952-1960), Koreans (1966-1980), Filipinos (1986-2000). The first store in Brownwood opened in 1850. In 1865, the United States Post Office was established in Brownwood, and it remained in operation until 1978. In 1869, the Texas Railroad Commission awarded a contract to build a line from San Antonio to Brownsville through Brownwood. The line was completed in 1872, and the community began to prosper as a result. In 1915, the population of Brownwood reached 1,500 people. During World War II, Brownwood played an important role as an artillery ammunition dump for Texarkana Army Air Field. After the war ended, the community experienced decline due to declining business values and limited resources. However, since 2000s there has been efforts to renaissance Brownwood with new businesses and initiatives such as its own civic center and arts district
