Brownwood Air Force Base is home to the Texas Air National Guard's 309th Fighter Wing, which was activated on 1 September 1948. The wing has two squadrons of F-4 Phantoms. The 309th FW also flies the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. The history of Brownwood AFB begins with World War I when it was a training airfield for American pilots. It later became an important hub for bomber operations in the Theater of Operations during World War II. During the Korean War, Brownwood AFB saw heavy use as a strategic bombing site and served as headquarters for Tactical Air Command (TAC) until its closure in 1991. In 2002, Brownwood AFB reopened as an air force base and now houses the Texas Air National Guard's 309th Fighter Wing which operates two squadrons of F-4 Phantoms and four Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers. The wing also flies the Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft and is home to the "Huey" Helicopter battalion that provides helicopter support to service members throughout their deployments worldwide including Operation Neptune's Spear in Afghanistan and Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq/Syria
The USAF operates three active Air Force wings, each with its own assigned Headquarters and Headquarters- subordinate organizations. These Air Forces are: the Pentagon- Wing 1 (United States), RAF Lakenheath- Wing 2 (UK), and EFG Far East - Wing 3 (Japan). Each wing is commanded by a Major General or Lieutenant General. The USAF has an inventory of more than 540 aircraft, including bomber, fighter, Helicopter and Missile aircraft. It is also responsible for the nation's nuclear deterrence. In addition to its military operations, the USAF also conducts civilian activities through its Civil Aviation Command which provides air traffic control services; provides security for Federal facilities; develops civil aviation regulations; inspects airlines and other transportation systems; manages airspace within the United States; and provides support for Special Operations forces.
The Brownwood Air Force Base gift history began on December 12th, 1951 when the base was opened and the first squadron was activated. The gift of a Lockheed P-2 Neptune to the Brownwood AFB Air Force Reserve Unit was very important in beginning this period of service.
Brownwood is a town in Grand Prairie County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Brownwood is located in west-central Grand Prairie and is bordered by Arlington to the north, Plano to the east, Irving to the south, and Garland to the west. The first settlers came from Kentucky in 1836. The town was named for General James Fenton Brown who fought against Mexican forces during the Texan Revolution. A post office was established at Brownwood on November 1, 1840, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 15, 1907. Brownwood was founded as a small community around a sawmill that operated since 1848. When that mill closed in 1901 due to low demand for lumber products in Texas, many of its residents left for other towns within Grand Prairie County or outside of Texas altogether because of those same low demand levels for lumber products statewide at that time. However some people did stay behind and started another sawmill which still operates today as Weller Sawmills (a subsidiary of Stonington Corporation). Other businesses included a grocery store and two churches which remain active today: First Baptist Church (now Highland Presbyterian) and Second Presbyterian Church (now Alliant Chapel). The post office also served as a schoolhouse from 1889 until 1911 before being replaced by an all-purpose building which still stands today across from First Baptist Church on Main Street. In 1925 local resident J H Boyd developed what would become one of TX's most famous industries; agriculture production with his Boyd Bros fertilizer company which produced ammonium nitrate (AN), code named "Boyd's" after him which became one of America's leading agricultural fertilizers until it ceased operations in 1976 after World War II due to overproduction caused by postwar technology advancements

Brownwood, Texas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The name "Brownwood" comes from the Choctaw word "boure" meaning "a clearing in the forest." It was given to the community by General Tom Brown who fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. The first courthouse in Brownwood was built in 1872 and it served as the county seat until 1886 when Brownsville became the county seat. The first store in Brownwood was built in 1881 and it operated under various names until 1913. In 1914, J.C. Penney opened his first store here and soon after other stores followed suit. By 1930, Brownwood had become one of the largest cities in Hudspeth County with a population of over 20,000 people. During World War II, Brownwood served as an airfield for American bombers providing support to Allied troops fighting on land or aboard ships off of Mexico's coast. After the war ended, many businesses closed but JCPenney kept open his store which still exists today within walking distance of all of its former locations including its original main building that once housed a post office and jail. In 1955, Brownwood merged with neighboring Humble to form Humble-Brownwoods Municipality which remains an independent municipality today with a population of around 25K residents (10% of Hudspeth County total). Many historical buildings have been preserved within this municipality including both local schools (Humble High School & Southern Methodist University) as well as Lubbock Municipal Airport which is now home to Humble Regional Airport Authority headquarters and several thousand employees representing more than 60 airlines operating out of JFK airport!
