The Brownsville Navy Deployed Gift History begins in 1945 with the USS Missouri (BB-63) delivering gifts to the Naval Base at Corpus Christi. The following year, 1946, saw the delivery of USS Indianapolis (CA-45) and USS San Antonio (AGI-10) to Brownsville. In 1948, the USS Ponce (LPD-9) arrived in town and began providing storage for military equipment on the pier. From 1951 to 1957, gifts were sent regularly from NAS Fort Worth (APD-2). In 1962, gift shipments stopped as a result of budget cuts but gifts continued to be delivered through 1966 when LPH(F)-5 was commissioned into service. Brownsville is a small, agricultural community located just east of Corpus Christi in the state of Texas. The first European arrival in what is now Brownsville occurred during the Mexican period when Spanish colonists—many from Veracruz—took up land grants along the Texas coast under treaty agreement with Mexico City. Beginning in 1836, Mexicans began arriving here en masse to work on ranches and farms that were part of Captain Antonio Lopez’s Santa Fe Expedition following his expedition’s failed attempt to explore512 miles (1,500 km) southward into Mexico through central America across Texas de la Sala y Gómez de Carranza Province on October 17th-20th 1835 This group included about 50 men under Captains Alonso Gomez Caballero & José Cámpora Pérez As these men traveled north they came into contact with Native Americans known as Chiricahua Apaches A band led by Chief Manuel Armijo attacked Captain Lopez’s party early October 25th1836 at Point Isabelle near present day San Pedro Springs . During this attack 20 Spaniards were killed including Captains Gomez Caballero & Pérez before they could flee back towards Monterrey On November 2nd1836 Captain Antonio Lopez sent 2nd lieutenant José Ortizancho with 21 soldiers under command consisting of 5 officers & 27 enlisted men to track down & kill all remaining Apaches at Rancho Rinconada which lay between San Pedro Springs west Golfito Creek & Rinconada River northwest Of present day Brownstown Junction where Ortizancho found them sleeping after routing them from their position late Saturday Evening Afternoon Without any loss however 3 scouts lost their lives while exploring this location Thereafter captain Ortega tookcommand Of Unit At Rinconada River Where he heldStatus Until January 1st 1837 When he left due To sickness From effects Of mountain fever He had contracted prior To his arrival These events set off a chain reaction that would lead to over 240 habitants moving into what is now BrownsVILLE from various parts Of Texas Between 1849 And 1865 By 1860 Over 350 families lived here In those days there were no streetlights or electricity so residents relied primarily Upon candles For illumination night or during daylight hours Many homes still have some type of light display such as oil lamps or kerosene lamps Today nearly all homes have air conditioning Some people refer to this area as “the ghost town” because there are few if any permanentResidents today Although there may be occasional visitors From time To timeThere has been no real signOf either militancyOr crime since Late 1990's until recent Years although reports do existofOutlaw Motorcycle Gang activityAnd numerous robberies inside&outside facilitiesIn December 2017 A single vehiclewas stolen from inside facility resulting InA callTo Law Enforcement
