Brownsville has a rich military history dating back to the turn of the century. The city was first settled in 1836 by Anglo-American settlers, and soon became a center of military activity. On December 12,1898, Brownsville’s first municipal election took place under the new system of government which replaced Mexican rule. Two days later, on Christmas Day, Mayor Manuel Gomez Oyarbide presented General Pershing with a gift certificate for $1,000 worth of goods and services from the Brownsville Clothing Company. This event is considered to be the beginning of Brownsville’s military tradition. In 1912, Brownsville became an official military town when it was annexed into San Antonio. During World War I, local soldiers served in various units throughout Texas and Mexico. In 1919-1920, Brown’s Volunteer Infantry Regiment was activated at nearby Laredo and served in Europe until disbanded due to lack of combat experience. After World War II ended, many local soldiers returned home to help rebuild Cleveland County (now Hidalgo County). From 1951-1992 Brownsville proudly hosted United States Air Force Base Camp Eagle duringOperation Neptune Spear which was conducted by United Nations Forces in order to quell the Korean War insurgency within North Korea. Today there is still active duty service within the Army National Guard and Marine Corps Reserve located here in Brown’s Towne Center area; however most services now take place at Lackland AFB outside Austin TX where much larger units are stationed for training exercises/reserve purposes only or when deployed overseas on joint operations with other nations more commonly known as Expeditionary Combat Units (ECU) such as Operation Neptune Spear Lionheart deployments some 20 years ago!

The Brownsville area was home to a military installation before the United States became a country. The first military installation in Brownsville was Fort Sam Houston, which was built in 1836. In 1861, the fort was renamed Fort Brown and it served as Headquarters of the Texas Rangers until 1865. In 1912, Fort Sam Houston School opened and served as a secondary school for soldiers and their families. The fort also housed a hospital from 1915-1920. In 1923, Fort Brown was decommissioned and its assets were used to build the Military Air Station Brownsville which still stands today.

In addition to its namesake river crossing, Brownsville has several tourist attractions including an amusement park known as "The World's Largest Waterpark" (opened in 1998), an agricultural museum known as "Museum del Agro", and two football stadiums - one for US college football teams (Brownsville ISD's Reynoso Stadium) and one for professional American football teams (Houston Texans' NRG Stadium).

By 1960, however, Brownsville had become one of Texas' largest cities with a population of over 200,000. During that decade it experienced rapid growth as factories closed or relocated to other parts of the state due to economic stagnation throughout much of America during this time period. After 1970s recession and immigration changes which decreased Hispanic employment opportunities in favor of Mexicans living near Houston, Brownsville's overall population declined until it reached its current level around 2010.

The original NRG Stadium, also located in downtown Brownsville, served as the home of baseball's Astros (1978-2006) and Astros again from 2007-2016 before being replaced by Minute Maid Park.
