Brownsville, Texas is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 21,811 as of the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County and has a retail market capitalization of $1 billion. Brownsville is also home to The University of Texas at Brownsville which has a student body of over 50,000 students. The area that now comprises Brownsville was founded by Spanish colonists in 1836 as part of the Alamo mission complex. In 1846, Mexico won its independence from Spain and annexed what are now Hidalgo and Tarrant counties into Mexican territory; Brownsville remained under Mexican jurisdiction until it was ceded to the United States in 1881. The first large settlement in present-day Brownsburg was made here by entrepreneurs who arrived during the 1850s following Texas’ admission to the Union as an American state. By 1860, most Texans had left for northern opportunities and only a few families remained in Brownsville. In 1865–1866, orders were given for all citizens of Presidio Battalion No 1 (the original fortification) east of San Antonio to move westward into what is now Webb County becausePresidio Battalion No 2 (the original fortification) would be destroyed by Confederate forces during their occupation of San Antonio. Brownsburg grew rapidly thanks to heavy cotton plantation ownership throughout most of 19th century Texas; however, Reconstruction ended with Houston’s victory over Texan secessionists at Avila on April 14, 1865. As part of this victory Houston redistributed land holdings among its own citizens and purchased additional acreage from individuals who had withheld acreage fromHouston since December 1861 due to fears that it would become Anglo hands should hostilities resume between Texans and federal troops remnants stationed within Mexican soil (although residual members did not actively resist Ulysses S Grant’s attempt to retake San Antonio). In 1887 Brownsburg became one hundred acres wide when two tracts totaling ninety-six acres were acquired from Juana de la Cruz Gutierrez y Gómez by James Matson & Company Agricultural Implement Mercantile Co., a local flour miller who had been operating outfitting cavalry soldiers fighting Santa Anna’s forces along the Rio Grande River Campaign during late 1884/early85… After several years service with Matson & Company partnership terminated due lack cf success while store continued operation without damage or loss adjoining existing store on Main Street corner First National Bank building where Postoffice moved after fire started attached Store Building behind First National Bank building [now known as Tower Place]. In 1898 Pecos Electric Light Co., inc., began operations town electric light system becoming municipally owned facility through electrification process opened doors for industry 7 miles NE side US - TX state line

Brownsville, Texas is a small town located in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tarrant County. The name "Brownsville" was given to the town by General Sam Houston in 1845 after his army crossed the Red River here and burned most of what was then known as Baylor College (now Baylor University). Brownsville has been home to many important events in its history including the Battle of Brown's Station on May 6, 1876 which led to Texas independence from Mexico and skirmishes between American and Mexican forces until 1883; and Hurricane Ike struck Brownsville on September 12, 2005 causing significant damage to several businesses. The first permanent settler in what became Brownsville was James Fenton who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin near present-day Slaughter Road and called it Fenton's Rancho de las Palmas de la Trinidad. A post office called Fenton until it was discontinued in 1865 because there were no subscribers. pioneer John Hance settled near present-day Slaughter Road in 1840; he named his place Hance's Mills after brother John Hance who had settled nearby four years earlier. In 1845 general Sam Houston ordered all Native American slaves brought upriver to be disposed of so that Texans could claim them for themselves as free people under the new Constitution of Texas. This order caused much commotion among the Indians because many of their own chiefs were among those taken into captivity when Mexico surrendered at Buena Vista Creek on April 14,1846. When news reached Brownsville thatGeneral Houston had issued this order, local citizens organized a resistance movement which forced Mexican troops out of town on May 6th during what became known as The Battle of Brown’s Station (later Battleship Point) – one of only two major engagements fought by Texans against Mexicans during the Revolution On October 9th 1861 insurgents opened fire on an assemblage composed mostlyof Union officers outside Fort Worth’s Court House while Sheriff Joseph Crowley officiated as judge presiding over an election contest between Confederate Robert Ewell Hoskins and Whittier Moorefield; 11 men died including Sheriff Crowley himself before reinforcements arrived 19 minutes later(); Race riots ensued throughout northcentral TX following this event Which quickly spread southward along IH 35W
On October 16, 1847, the Texas Rangers were organized in Brownsville. The Rangers were tasked with stopping Mexican smugglers and bandits from entering Texas. In 1865, the Rangers were disbanded and their functions taken over by the military. In 1915, Brownsville was renamed after General James Fenton Brown who fought in the Mexican-American War. On July 15, 1945, Brown's hometown of Brownsville was destroyed by a bombing raid conducted by Japanese forces during World War II.
