The Brenham National Guard was organized on December 5, 1916. The unit was activated on January 1, 1917 and initially served in the Texas Department of Public Safety. On October 28, 1919, the National Guard was redesignated as the Brenham County National Guard and continued to serve in that capacity until May 2, 1942 when it was again redesignated as the Brenham County Sheriff's Office National Guard. The sheriff's office served concurrently with the Brenham County National Guard from 1942-1946. As a result of World War II service, the national guard lost its status as a county agency and became an independent military entity under the control of the Texan Air Force. On September 15, 1946, the Brenham County Sheriff's OfficeNational Guard was disbanded and its members were placed into various other county agencies across Texas. The remaining members of the original sheriff's office national guard are still present today and continue to provide law enforcement services within their respective counties.
