Brenham, Texas is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Brenham is located on the east bank of the Brazos River. It lies within the Tyler–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Brenham was part of what is now Wichita Falls and Hockley counties in 1879 when it was part of the Wichita National Forest. In 1907, Quitman County was created from portions of Hockley and Wichita Falls counties and named for Major General James Fenton Quitman who had led Ulysses S. Grant's forces against Mexican President Porfirio Diaz in that year's Battle of Pecos (1847). In 1916, Keith Edwards founded Edwards-Langtry Construction Co., a construction company which soon became one of the largest employers in Brenham. The company built many landmarks including City Hall (1922), State Capitol Building (1927), and First Baptist Church (1929). After World War II, Edwards began to expand his business into agriculture with the establishment of Texaco Rancho Seco near present-day Brenham; this later became one of the largest ranching operations in TX history. In 1958, local historian Drayton Walls announced plans to create a world heritage site for Brenham if he were elected mayor of Tyler metropolitan area; Walls' proposal received support from then-Gov Rick Perry as well as other officials throughout Tyler/Fort Worth metroplex during its initial evaluation period by UNESCO in 1980s. On November 3rd, 2008, UNESCO approved nomination for Brenham as a World Heritage Site under Chapter VIII: Cultural Properties – Memory & Reconciliation between People & Nature section which allows for designation "of exceptional special interest" pursuant to Article 2(a) thereof due to its significant historical significance dating back to pre-Hispanic times through post-independence era until today’s day; this designation would make Brenham one of only two ghost towns designated as such by UNESCO outside OFSTED System areas globally. On July 6th 2013 Mayor Donny Hill announced that they will be demolishing all businesses around central square and any churches or schools within 10 feet radius so that there will be nothing left standing but an empty lot with some new homes being built on top
Brenham was founded in 1847 by a group of Methodist ministers. The town became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail, and was home to several cotton plantations until the early 21st century. In recent years, Brenham has become known as a center for agriculture and cattle ranching.
