Brenham is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,807 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Brenham is an agricultural and ranch town with a small downtown district and several dozen small businesses. The main crop of Brenham is cotton, but other crops include corn, soybeans, potatoes, onions, garlic and tomatoes. The first people to live in Brenham were Native Americans who hunted game near present day Brenham Lake. After European settlement began in the 1800s, several farms were built in what are now eastern Hudspeth County and western Wilbarger County. In 1892 John Waddell founded the Dakota grain elevator on current day Elm Avenue just east of Main Street in what is now downtown Brenham. At this time much of the land that makes up modern-day Brenham was rural farmland used for grazing animals by farmers and their families. By 1911 when oil was discovered near present day Fort Worth it became clear that this would be a major center for petroleum production so various government booster organizations formed to promote oil drilling within local boundaries In 1916 Henry Cisneros became mayor of Reynosa (now Mexico City) after being elected as president of Mexico City’s city council; he returned to Reynosa as Mayoralty District I head of state security following Mexicali’s mayoral election on October 20th 1916 which resulted into his victory over Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Castilla (former Governor General). On November 12th 1916 President Cisneros designated San Antonio Jiménez as acting mayor designate until hire by Mayor Cisneros who assumed office on December 13th 1916 thereby becoming San Antonio Jiménez first non-HispanicMayor ever while living in Reynosa. One account has it that when Jiménez arrived he found that there were no buildings or even roads available for him to take office since allusions had been made to build one but nothing had actually happened since prior thereto! A few weeks later construction began on the First Baptist Church which still stands today across from Harris High School.(See photo below) James Hogg donated land east of Main Street between Elm Avenue and FM 1960 for what is now Stake Missionary Baptist Church while David Lubbock donated land west side between Elm Avenue and FM 1960 for what is now First Baptist Church Today both churches are significant historical landmarks within the community. Reverend James Ewart Fenton arrived from England about 1881 soon after Depot Dickenson opened trading post at Great Western Field Corner opposite where current day US Hwy 277 meets TX HWY 183. When Fenton arrived many Texans wanted him to teach them how to read but because English wasn't widely spoken among them he taught them arithmetic instead. About 1895 or 1896 another teacher named Asa Comfort came from Kentucky where he had been teaching school before moving down Texas about 1850 having settled at Longviewnear Decaturhe started teaching students bible classes By 1901 most residents hereabouts spoke English so Mr Dutton established Post Office & Store frontingMain Street Mr Dutton died suddenly leaving family cash value $4000+
