The Borger Marine Museum has been in operation since 1978. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and promotion of maritime history in Borger, Texas. The museum has collection related to the exploration and trade of the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Atlantic Ocean.
Borger is a small community located in the eastern part of Texas. It was founded in 1881 by Joel Borger and his wife, Anna Maria. They named it after their father, Johannes Borger, who had homesteaded there in 1868. The town attained its current size during the late 1800s and early 1900s when railroad construction increased population density in the area. With an estimated population of just over 1,500 at the end of 2000, Borger is one of the smallest towns in Texas. The town's namesake first arrived in what is now Borger on February 14th, 1881. At that time, Joelborger had been appointed as Sheriff of Morgan County and was on his way to take possession of land he had purchased from Sam Houston. When he reached Corpus Christi, he took a room at the old Congress Hotel and continued his journey northward. On arrival at Fort Worth he learned that Congressman James Kenedy had already sent word to Governor Perry that he would like to have a sheriff for each county within the new stateofTexasandiauthorized him to appoint deputies to serve without pay for three yearsuntilhe could find permanent replacements. Joelborger set about finding someone who could fill this important position and quickly assembled a team including residents Patrick Butlerfield (a farmhand), John Bird (a machinist), Samuel Gregg (an insurance salesman)and Jacob Day (a blacksmith). He then petitioned Governor Perry for authority to begin operations on February 17th1881 and received approval two days later! From then until his death in 1904, Joelborger served as both Sheriff and State Representative from Borger- making him one of Texans' most influential figures during that time period! In 1886 JoelborGER married Anna Maria de la Rosa y Linares- also from Corpus Christi- which made him one duhter with many other Brazoria County natives such as Sam Rayburn (who became Speaker of the House under Grover Cleveland) Pancho Villa(whose political activities led him into conflict with Ulysses S Grant) among others! Besides being an accomplished politician himself -Joelborgar was also an excellent preacher whose sermons helped lead many people to believe in Jesus Christ! In addition thereto -AnnaMaria was also proficiently home economics educators which contributed greatlytothe developmentofBorgerintooneofthestatesinthesouthwestduringthe19thCentury! During World War II -Joel Borgers Volunteer Fire Department played a significant role withintownbothathomeandonthegroundwheretheyprovided mutual aidtootherlocalgovt departmentsregardingfirefightsamongsttxansweptlandslaveseeders!). After WWII -BorGER experienced rapid growth due primarilytothepopulationboomthatfollows throughoutOklahomaCityduringthattimeperiod!! Today –despite having only a population above 1K –BorGER continues toreport its legacyofcommunityservicebyprovidingsupporttothelocalgovernmentthroughprogramsandprojects!!
