I first met Borger in the early 1990s while I was a student at Prairie View A&M University. I had just completed my undergraduate degree and was looking for a job. My professor, Dr. Billie Joanne White, recommended me to visit Borger, Texas. At that time, it was an unincorporated community located near San Antonio on the outskirts of Austin. Borger is a small town that has seen some major changes over the years. It is now home to about 1,500 residents and has seen a dramatic increase in its population since 2010 when it became part of the city of Austin. The reason for this growth is not completely clear, but Borger seems to have been successful in attracting businesses and entrepreneurs to its small-town atmosphere and strong community spirit. The townspeople are very friendly and welcoming, and they make sure that their residents have everything they need – from groceries to transportation options – without ever trying to take control of what goes on in their town. In fact, most of the time there is no one who really controls anything in Borger because everyone works together towards common goals. Borger, Texas was founded by Antonio Borger in 1876. The community was named for him after he settled there in 1871. Borger built a sawmill and store on the town square and operated it until his death in 1902. In 1916, the name of the town was changed to Borger to honor Antonio's memory.
