Borger, Texas is located in the eastern Panhandle of Texas and is named after General James F. Borger, who was a Confederate general during the American Civil War. The town was founded by Andrew Jackson in 1836 as a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. The town grew rapidly due to its location and became an important commercial center for the area. In 1845, Borger became the capital of what would become Brazoria County. The town experienced significant growth during the late 19th century due to its strategic location and its role as a transportation hub for the region. During this time, Borger also became known for its unique architecture, which includes several Gothic Revival-era buildings including the Borger Building and Joe's Saloon. In addition, Borger also played a significant role in developing local government within Brazoria County. In 1907, Borger was renamed after Congressman John J. Kirby (D-Houston). By 1920, however,borGER had declined in importance and had stopped being an important economic center. However, it continued to be used as a place of residence until 1974 when it was placed underdeveloped designation by the Texas Department of State Historic Resources.
