Borger was founded in 1874 by John Borger and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1902, the Borger post office was established and remained in operation until 1967. A store and restaurant were built in the early 1900s and remain operational today.
