Bonham, Texas is a small town located in Wise County, Texas. The population was 1,492 at the 2010 census. Bonham has been home to coffeehouses since the 1800s and is one of the most significant coffeegrowing areas in the United States. The first Starbucks opened in Bonham in 1984. The town's history can be traced back to 1846 when entrepreneur John Waddell founded a store called Waddell's Coffee House & Saloon on Main Street. Waddell was known for his quality coffee and he offered customers free samples of his beans before they bought any. In 1902, businessman George Haggerty built an addition to Waddell's Store that became known as Haggerty's Coffee House & Cafe. This business served as the nucleus around which other early Bonham cafes developed. By 1915, Haggerty had acquired more than twenty-five businesses including five grocery stores and two hotels along with his own printing shop and office building on Third Street (now Harrison Avenue). In 1927, Gussie Moran opened Moran's Coffee House & Cafe on what is now State Highway 63 (SH 63). Moran was successful in expanding coffee production throughout Texas and internationally; by 1930 he had established a network of thirty-six cafes across thirteen countries including Japan and Europe. By 1935, Moran was making $2 million per year from sales of coffee alone and his businesses were employing over 200 people. However, during World War II Moran sold all his assets except for three cafés within eighteen months due to rationing conditions while hundreds of workers were drafted into military service. By 1945 Moran had closed down all but two of his cafés due to competition from new national chains such as Dunkin' Donuts andSNAP Foods which began franchising their operations nationally soon after Pearl Harbor ended hostilities in 1945 (Wright et al., 1990). The post-war period saw rapid growth for Bonham caffeine sources with twelve new roasters opening their doors between 1946-1948 alone (Lloyd et al., 1998). These new roasters included Carrillo Bros./Carrillo Coffee Roasters Incorporated who merged with Brown Bros./Brown Coffee Roasters Incorporated in 1951 becoming one of America’s first major espresso franchises (Dorsey 2009a). The townsite was named for General James E. Bonham of the Union Army during the American Civil War. Bonham was founded by John Work and his family on July 3, 1875 as a small farming community located near what is now Waco, Texas. Work had come to Texas in 1859 with his parents and settled in Trinity County near present-day Tyler, Texas. In 1865 he married Anna Ladd and they raised six children until their deaths in 1918 and 1927 respectively. Anna's brother-in-law, Michael Noland (1841-1917), donated land to the town in 1924 which became known as Noland Park after him. 1st Methodist Episcopal Church was built on this site in 1928 by Mrs. Hilda Ackerly and dedicated December 8th by Reverend Samuel Prentice with Rev C Fenton officiating In 1951 Dr J D Cobb added an addition to the church that still stands today On October 4th of that year the first ever formal school graduation party took place here when twelve students graduated from high school . After World War II most of the farmsteads were bought out by developers who subdivided and developed much of what is now downtown Bonham into apartments and shopping areas . However many historic buildings remain including 1st Methodist Episcopal Church which still functions as a functioning church today

Coffee became an important commodity in Europe after it was discovered by Columbus on his voyage to the Indies (1492). After Columbus's arrival in Mexico City, he tasted some of the local beans and brought them back to Spain where they began to be traded among different merchants. The first European sale of coffee took place at a convent on May 14, 1493, when a group of Spanish merchants bought four sacks of beans from Don Alonso Martinez de Prieto, governor of New Andalusia (present-day southern Spain). In 1516, Francisco Pizarro and his men raided a caravan carrying beans from Peru and captured almost all the cargo including 600 pounds (227 kg) of coffee! For the next hundred years or so, Peru would become one of the main sources for Portuguese traders sailing to India through Brazil looking for new trade routes. When Portugal lost control over India during the 16th century due to Dutch military pressure, coffee became available again as Portuguese traders started trading through Southeast Asia instead. By 1615 there were about two thousand small plantations operating under Spanish rule across South America growing pepper and tobacco while leaving behind coffeeshaves and other products such as sugar cane juice and chocolate. From Java until 1765 all Indian slaves were required to work together picking tea bushes near Macau; however once Java fell into British hands slavery quickly ensued although many Indonesians managed to escape bondage before this happened - these include Gustave Flourens who spent more than twenty years smuggling goods between Indonesia and Java before escaping finally arriving safely in England in 1853 aboard HMS Beagle! Therolf Schumacher carried out research on early Colombian plantations between 1901-1902 using plant specimens collected by Dr Jules Conte who had been working at Pantepec Agricultural Station near Bogotá during this time period studying early varieties of Colombian coffee trees grown by indigenous people called Warao Negroes according as Aroma de la tierra or Oeste do Javari where he named two types or strains viz: Viña del Mar Negro ("New World" type) which grows near Cartagena de Indias; y el Betis Negro ("Black Belt" type) grown northwest of Bogotá near Pasto Surco Creek known today as El Quimbo National Park! This study allowed him to identify eighteen differentvarieties belonging to three subspecies viz: Grifola Antirrhopuscularis (Aura de la Tierra), Viña del Mar Negro ("New World" type), y Betis Negro ("Black Belt" type) ! It should be noted that even though Schumacher did extensive fieldwork on this subject his findings have yetto be reproduced or fully investigated anywhere else! One interesting fact about Schumacher’s research is that most if not allof these earlier tribal names still remainunknown today making it difficult if not impossibleto accurately map out where certain bean types may have originated from ! However based upon his findings it seems likely that several membersthat we know today such as Santa Marta Island off Colombia\’s eastern coast may have belonged intothe Warao black belt type mentioned above . Furthermore another possible origin could be traced back totopoetting sites located around Cundinamarca Province located eastofthe Andes Mountains bordering Venezuelan territory where ground roasting operations took place centuries ago yielding numerous different bean types such as Araguaiana(Brazilian), Caracas Grande( Venezuelan), & La Libertad( Argentinean)! These investigations will continue apartheid South America!"
