Bonham, Texas is an unincorporated community located in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. According to the Handbook of Texas Online, Bonham was named for Benjamin Bonham, a settler who arrived in 1874. The first post office in Bonham opened on December 12, 1876. The community consolidated with other communities within Tarrant County on January 1, 1907. On that date, the county seat was moved from Farmers Branch to Bonham. According to the 2000 census there were 2,527 people living in Bonham when it was placed into effect on November 15th of that year; however since then its population has increased by 125%. As of 2006 there were 3,006 residents and as of 2011 it had reached 4,031 residents according to the censuses taken since then. Bonham is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Bonham was founded in 1872 by John C. Bonham and his wife Lucy as a station on the Santa Fe Railway. In 1912, the town name was changed to honor General George Armstrong Custer and it remains so today. The first settler in what is now Bonham was John C. Bonham, who arrived in 1872 from Missouri with his family after traveling overland from Wichita Falls, Texas. He organized a wagon train that traveled to Fort Worth and began trading goods with Native American leaders for new horses and other supplies needed for the army during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Afterward, he resumed farming along Trinity Creek until 1870 when he sold his land to A.F. Stone for $2 per acre ($40 per km²). In 1912, John Denton decided to move from Arlington Heights, Illinois to establish a new homebase near Austin in order to better compete with other large cities in Texas for jobs and education opportunities available within their boundaries. At first glance (in 1911), Austin appeared too far away or too expensive (at $6 per month) to justify moving permanently; however, Denton soon realized that if he could find suitable housing close by then there would be little danger of becoming stranded should hostilities between Mexico and America reach an unexpected high point – something which didn’t happen until 1914 due largely to intervention by Ulysses S Grant while president of America.) Accordingly, on July 11th of that year Denton purchased 640 acres east of current dayBonham from Wm Hogg for $3/acre ($60/km²). From this purchase came much development activity within what is now known as downtown Bonham including: construction of both the original First National Bank building (now called “the State Capitol Buildingâ€) as well as numerous other buildings throughout ensuing years including:the Post Office (1915),Lone Star School District Headquarters Building (1928),First Methodist Church (1930), BaptistChurch reopening following damage caused by fire(1937),and finally most recently City Hall located adjacent immediately west of Lone Star Park on Main Street where city government has been officed since 1937! In 1950, Bonham's population was only 582. However, due to an increase in growth rates throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bonham's population has since increased to over 20,000 people.
