The first post office was established in 1837. In 1840, the population of Bonham was just over 50 people. By 1860, it had grown to around 200 people. In 1870, the county seat of Cameron County was moved from Bonham to Walnut Creek because of a land grant made to Jameson Kropotkin by President Ulysses S. Grant.
