Boerne is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 12,493 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The trade name for Boerne is "The Gateway to the Hill country". The first people to live in what is now Boerne were the Caddo Indians. They were followed by the Mexican and Anglo settlers in 1836. In November 1861, an ordinance was passed establishing a school district in Webb County and providing for its funding. The first teacher was Mrs. Jenteel Greggs teaching one class from a house on Elm Street (later renamed Park Boulevard). In 1865, John Hogg donated land to build a school with room for 240 students. Mrs. Hogg named it after her late husband Rev. James Hogg who had been killed during the American Civil War and buried near Houston in McKinney National Cemetery as part of that city's peace process settlement with former Confederate forces known as the "Hogg Brigade". In 1868-1911 there were six churches located throughout Webb County: First Baptist Church (1868), Methodist Episcopal Church (1871), Presbyterian Church (1875), Baptist church (1879), Congregationalist church (1881) and Roman Catholic church (1904). A Seventh Day Adventist church was built in 1901 on land donated by Mr. Julius Fuhrman which still stands today across from First Baptist Church/Methodist Episcopalchurch on Park Boulevard just east of I-20 exit 512B south of downtown Boerne In 1893-1996 there were three schools: First Christian School(1893), Highland High School(1901) and Lamar Technical Institute(1970).
