This led to increased development around the city including: an opera house/theatre built on what is now Main Street between 1840 and 1890; two hotels – one built between 1880 and 1900 on Second Avenue between Houston Boulevard and Elmendorf Road; six department stores buildings along Main Street between First Avenue northward until they were replaced by four more department stores buildings northeast between Second Avenue northward until they were replaced by two more department stores buildings east of Interstate 610 south until they were replaced by three more department stores buildings east of Interstate 610; four cotton warehouses located along Third Street southward before being replaced by two more warehouses located along Fourth street westward before being replaced by one warehouse located along Third street eastward which housed several heavy industry plants including blast furnaces for steel production; truck terminals adjacent to Interstate 610 where goods could be unloaded onto cars or buses destined for points south before being transported back into Texas via I-10A
