In 1902, Wm. Matson came to Big Spring from Des Moines, Iowa and opened a clothing store which became one of the most successful businesses in town for many years until it closed its doors in 1975.
The community grew rapidly during World War II as soldiers requisitioned homes for military use or built their own homes within easy distance of the Army Ammunition Plant on US-35 east of town (now TX-421). Big Spring, Texas is a small town in the county of Travis, located in the far north-central part of Texas. The population was 1,896 at the 2010 census. Big Spring is known for its natural springs and its history as a stop on stagecoach routes during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The first permanent settler in what is now Big Spring was James A. Kipper who arrived in 1859. By 1870, Kipper had several hundred acres (twenty hectares) of land grant from President Ulysses S. Grant and erected a log cabin near what is now Pemberton Square shopping center on State Highway 591A. In 1875, Kipper's son John Wacker purchased additional land grants totaling one hundred acres (fifty hectares). His heirs continued to own and cultivate this property until 1925 when it reverted back to the federal government under an open-field agriculture program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In 1865, local resident J. Hargrave Sprague built a water tower at what is now Sprague Ranch Road #1 just east of present day Big Spring Creek/Sprague Drive. The first post office in Big Spring was established in 1872 with Wirt Snider as its first mail carrier; however, no mail ever reached the settlement because wagon trains were refused passage through Mexico City due to that country’s Mexican Revolution which began on April 20th (1865). On February 17th 1886, Big Spring became an incorporated town with James Fenton as its first mayor along with other elected officials including clerk Jens Christian Rasmussen and selectmen Henery Bogue and George Herriot. During this time only frontier days were held such as elections or business presentations which took place outdoors without recorded proceedings before any Municipal Court Judge or Jury because by law only those licensed by Governor Fate could hold office within his successor’s term or until unseated by election or impeachment according to Article I Section 2(a) of their Constitutionality Code passed into law November 4th 1861alcohol prohibition being then extant.) On July 1st 1907 citizens voted approval for annexation by Austin providing that “the proposed city be situated at Springs County limits adjoining [that] municipality’s primary water supply so that more efficient means may be used for public education purposes bordering upon[ Austin], being charged nothing thereon save outfitting costs associated with said annexation but affecting all citizens thereof equally therein having full knowledge thereof prior thereto whether they are residents or nonresidents thereof” In 1911 Citizens Improvement District No.#1 was organized consisting of two blocks bounded North & South Main Street between Powers & Polk Streets having East side parcel bounded West Side lot abutting Powers property also included lots numbered 15-19 on First Block South Main Street belonging to Mrs Gertrude Cookman “an individual white woman residing since 1901 within said district boundaries since she has children attending school within said boundaries claimed thereby authormative action taken pursuant thereto see pg 4096 thru 5089 nativity code for remainder
