In 1836, General Sam Houston founded an post called Fort Bend County, which included parts of what is now Big Spring. Between 1838 and 1840, Major James Fenton built a fort on the San Antonio River in what is now downtown Big Spring. After Fort Bend County was created, it became part of Ulysses S Grant’s new territory after he won the Mexican-American War. In 1845, General William Hance moved his army from Austin to take possession of Grant’s new territory. He named his unit “The Battalion of American Volunteers” after President Polk had sent him reinforcements during the war. At this time, Big Spring was known as “TheFort Worth of Texas” because so many American servicemen had lived there before they joined up with General Hance’s army or went off to fight for Mexico. From here until 1861, Big Springs saw little action during the Civil War because most of its citizens sided with Confederate States of America (CSA). However, on April 6th 1861 – just weeks before Texas seceded fromthe Union – Big Springs hosted a pro-Union rally organized by local farmers and businessmen. Unfortunately for CSA supporters living in Big Spring at this time, their attempt failed when Company G of The United States Army refused to deliver munitions to them despite being ordered to do so by their commanding officer Colonel John Smith III. This demonstration marked the beginning of end for both sides in Little Rock Arkansas however it did lead to some good relations between these two communities over time
