The name "Big Spring" is derived from the creek that flows through the town and its namesake spring. The first European to visit Big Spring was Nicholas de Torrance in 1541. In 1836, James Fenton founded a cattle ranch in what is now Big Spring and named it after his home country of Spain. A year later, American Sam Houston purchased land north of Big Spring from Fenton and established an outpost called Fort Worth on this land. From here he began building up nearby Fort Worth into one of the most important towns in Texas during the early years of its growth as a statehood nation. After spending a number of months marching through difficult terrain and engaging numerically superior Mexican forces, General Capps' brigade arrived at Monterrey on January 8th where they were engaged by force of Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army led by Teodoro Cavazos y Anaya known as La Hacienda del Rio Grande which resulted in several hundred casualties including General Capps himself who was captured but successfully released before reaching Mexico City.
