The first store in Big Spring opened its doors on Main Street on November 14, 1880. A blacksmith shop and a wagon shop were also established at this time. By 1886, there were three general stores in the community with a total population of 350 people. In 1903, a school district was formed which included Big Spring as well as neighboring towns such as Palestine and White Oak Creek. In 1907, voters approved annexation of Little Elm by the new school district which made Big Spring an official town with its own government and police force. On January 1, 1912, during World War I (1914-18), members of the Upland Motorcycle gangsters killed six people including four teachers at Dayton Elementary School before escaping into Mexico City through Mexico City Airport using a motorcycle they stole from local law enforcement officers while on assignment there that day inside city limits On October 16th 1923 a tornado touched down just east of town damaging many homes but no deaths occurred
