There’s no one answer to the question of how coffee came to Big Spring, Texas. However, there are a few key elements that contributed. The first and most important factor was the man who founded Big Spring in 1885, John Wesley Hardin. Hardin had started up a small town in Junction County, Kansas, and he decided to move his operations to the new location in 1887. He named his business “Big Spring Coffee Company” and it quickly became one of the leading coffee businesses in the area. The second factor was railroads. When Hardin first opened up his store, he didn’t know how to sell his coffee beans so he sold them by weight or measurement cups. Over time, though, he learned how to package and ship his beans using railroad containers. This allowed him to reach a wider audience and make more money than if he had been selling individual cups of coffee. In addition, other entrepreneurs also played a role in spreading coffee around Big Spring over the years. In 1912, Harry Laughlin established the Laughlin Coffee & Tea Company here in Big Spring- which would later become known as Starbucks Coffee Corporation- which helped fuel interest in coffee throughout the region. In 1916, Johnnie Byrd set up shop here too and made waves within the community for starting what is now called White Eagle Coffee Roasters (website). Finally, it wasn’t until 1974 that we saw our first true artisanal café open up here- aptly named “Café de la Esperanza” (www). At this point in time, café owners were able to take their own bold approach with their drinks and food items while still maintaining some level of quality control over their establishments- something that has continued into today!

Big Spring, Texas is a small town located in Hardin County, Texas. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Big Spring was founded in 1881 by James E. Sprague and named for his sister's birthplace, Big Spring near Selma, Alabama. The first post office in Big Spring was established in 1882. At the time of its founding, it was one of the smaller towns in Hardin County. By 1910, its population had increased to 2,000 and it became the county seat of Hardin County. In 1916, Big Spring became an independent municipality and adopted a new government form known as a city charter. It remained an independent municipality until 1975 when it merged with nearby Arlington to form Arlington-Big Springs-Arlington Municipality. The history of BigSpring starts with James E. Sprague who arrived here from Mobile Bayou on October 15th 1881 after spending several weeks exploring this area looking for land for himself and his family. Mr Sprague sawed timber from the local cedar trees that were still standing then he started building himself a home which he named "Sprague's Ranch" just outside of town on what is now West streets Street and Arkansas Avenue today (now called Holliday Boulevard). In 1886 he married Anna Mae Tracy and together theystarted raising their children here including James Jr., wife Lillie Mae (later Mrs John Dvorak), son Clyde (later Dr Clyde Gentry) daughter Alma ( later Mrs Art Haggerty) sons David (Dr Dave Gentry) wife Lois Lane Wendell(Linda Wendell), grandson JimmySprague III wife Karen Kappsprague children: Willie Sprague Jr., Karl Sandoval
