The Big Spring Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized on November 15, 1846 and mustered into service on December 1. The regiment served in the Mexican-American War and took part in the Battle of Cerdanya on January 10, 1847. They also fought at the Battle of Resaca del Paso on February 6 and March 19. After being discharged from service they joined the Texas Rangers. In 1865 they were re-organized as a Cavalry Regiment and served until their disbandment in 1870.

Big Spring, Texas is a large city in the Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas. The population was 146,527 as of the 2010 census. Big Spring is the county seat for Hudspeth County. The city was founded in 1884 and named for Big Spring Creek. It has since grown to be one of the largest cities in the area with over 165,000 residents as of 2010. The origins of Big Spring are unknown but it is thought that it may have been founded by Native Americans or Mexicans who were seeking refuge from the violence and poverty found elsewhere in Texas during the mid-19th century. However, Big Spring itself does notofficial formal history until 1884 when it was renamed for Big Spring Creek after its discovery by surveyors on their way to build a branch line connecting Wichita Falls and Dallas. At that time, Houston had just become an independent republic and local leaders decided to rename their town after Houston’s most powerful rival at that time – one which would also serve as a symbol of defiance againstHouston’s growing power base. The first post office opened in 1885 and continued serving until 1907 when it moved to San Antonio due to limitations on distance being able to be measured by mail carriers at that time. In 1967, Hudspeth County was created from portions of Whitman County so that more central government could be centralized in what would later become Austin proper. As part of this process, Hudspeth County became Brazoria County’s responsibility; however, because Brazoria County lacked any major settlements other than Brownsville (the county seat), no official records exist documenting Big Spring's relationship with Brazoria County up until its annexation into Austin in 1970. It wasn't until 1980 when then-Mayor Harry Blackmun declared "it's about time" for allusions between Austin and Little Rock – both cities were only two miles away from each other – that Brazoria County officials finally began producing records relating to McGregor Homecoming Weekend festivities which took place September 10-12th 1974 at FM 1960 & SH 288 near Fort Bend Park while Brownville hosted traditional carnival games & contests along IH 10 near Loop 610 West known then asLoop 604 Southwestern Freeway). Although little documentation exists verifying these claims given various gaps within BrazoriaCounty archives (& lack evidence any such events ever occurred), they do seem likely based off contemporaneous reports & commemoration materials available online dating back to around this time period including remarks made by Mayor Blackmun himself during his inaugural address less than 3 years earlier regarding how much he enjoyed hosting visiting dignitaries from across America within our “Most Southern City InTexas!” Unfortunately though due largely (but not solely)to budgetary constraints & historical neglect ensuing from successive administrations unable or unwilling TO invest resources otherwise destined towards developing our vibrant downtown core instead opted instead pour money into expanding Fannin Street Subway Station… still something we can all see every day from inside Of HIS Majestic City Hall!
