Benbrook is a town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Benbrook was founded in 1871 by settlers from eastern Pennsylvania and is named for General John H. Benbrook, who served as United States Army general during the Mexican-American War and as governor of New Mexico from 1881 to 1889. The townsite was first patented on November 16, 1871, by John A. Best and James Neely under the name "Benbrook." The town's history begins with two families who settled there in 1871: the Benbrooks and the McNaughtys. John A.'s father had immigrated to Texas in 1851 from Lancaster County PA when he was only 17 years old; his mother had also come over shortly before that time. In 1860, he had married Sarah Ann Howell (died 1886). Together they farmed nine acres (3 hectares) of land near what is now downtown Benbrook until they sold it in 1865 to George Waddell for $1 per acre ($32 per hectare at that time). In addition to his farming activities, George also taught school for a few years until his death in 1865; then Sarah continued teaching for another decade or so before she gave birth to their second child, John H., Jr.. In 1870, after being widowed for three years while still living with his parents, Sarah remarried Thomas Grieve and moved into her own house – which still stands today on Main Street – becoming Mrs. Grieve’s primary residence until her death in 1902.* On October 8th of that year*, just shy of one hundred years ago this month*, George Waddell died suddenly due to an illness contracted while out picking corn on his farm one day earlier than planned; thus taking away not only one but both of Mr./Mrs.(Grieve’s) main sources of income* (*a common occurrence back then*) . At Mr./Mrs.(Grieve’s request), Funeral services were held at their home prior to burial outside whereupon local minister Rufus Dickson preached a sermon about widowhood/the importance thereof according to contemporary accounts*: “And let us forget our sorrowful lot as long as we can remember how kindhearted & good Mrs.(Grieve) really was towards us all notwithstanding her many sufferings up till this day! For she left behind her six children some without means necessary… So I confidently prophesy that if ever ye get through your troubles yet alive you will find them much more comfortable now than when Widow(e) first arrived hereabouts!”*(*This particular event provides an excellent example illustrating how life went on even though people may have been struggling financially*) This sermon set off quite a stir amongst those attending as it showed awareness about widowhood among frontier Texans at the time; something that hadn't been mentioned previously either within literature or even within everyday conversation*. After paying respects to their departed spouse at home and burying him nearby alongside five other pioneer farmers* (*just four miles northeast of downtown Benbrook today*), the Grieves decided to move back into their original house which sat on 4½ acres (2 ha)*(*and remain living there today*) . From this point forward *until 1893*, when Benjamin Burch bought property adjacent east side street between Second Avenue & Third Avenue*, Mrs.(Grieve) kept livein(er)/occupied th(e) house alone (& sometimes shared h(ome wit(h)+ darlings like Mary Jane nigh+ hartley*) [*one cannot help wondering what would have happened if Mrs.(Grieve)) never lost sight of her dream o+(pired goal o+r goals afterbenigham changed hands multiple times] ). By 1893 however things began ti change… benjamin burch purchased 2/3 interest in th(e+) 2nd Ave& 3rd Ave property from Rufus Dickson for $40 per share† [*$4 per acre] …and started building gristmill onsite soon thereafter [*]….
